Salesian Spirituality
What is Salesian Spirituality?

Salesian Spirituality is a way of living the Gospel as learned, loved and shared by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane de Chantal. These two spiritual friends cofounded the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610. The following are some specific characteristics of the Salesian charism.

All people are invited to live a life of holiness, as best fits one's individual life circumstances and personal characteristics. Saint Francis de Sales is quoted, "Be who you are and be that well to serve the Master Craftsman whose handiwork we are."  The "little virtues" of patience, gentleness, simplicity, hospitality are powerful means for growing holy. These pursuits are practical, everyday opportunities to live a devout life, responding to the love of God.

Each moment of the day comes from the hand of God--we only have the present moment to live our lives. This thought is best expressed in the following counsel of Saint Francis de Sales: "Do not look forward to what might happen tomorrow; the same Everlasting Father who cares for you today, will take care of you tomorrow and every day.  Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it.  Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations."

400 Year Anniversary of the Visitation Order

An important milestone is approaching for the Salesian Family: the 400th anniversary of the Visitation, founded by Saints Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal on June 6, 1610. As we approach the fourth centenary, the Federations of Visitation Sisters in the United States and in France have suggested a time of preparation. We have named 2007 the Year of Saint Francis de Sales; 2008 the Year of Saint Jane de Chantal; 2009 up to June, 2010, the Year of the Visitation. By Visitation we mean both the Gospel mystery and the history of the Order, with its many offshoots and groups influenced by Salesian Spirituality.

All of the Salesian Family connected to Visitation in the Twin Cities will be invited to participate in study, prayer, and a number of events including a pilgrimage to Annecy, and a display with celebratory liturgy at the Basilica. May Jesus live!
